Factory of Art

At the beginning of 2007, Łódź Art Center, CHOREA Theatre Association and the City Office of Łódź created the Factory of Art. The Factory of Art is a cultural institution whose actions are education-oriented and focus on theatre and modern art. CHOREA is responsible for the theatre and performance activities of the Factory of Art. They prepare concerts, plays and theatre actions in the city space, carry out research on the origins of theatre, dance and music, and share the results through cyclical workshops, which from the very beginning of the Factory of Art assumed a form of  ‘Tuesdays in the Factory of Art’, and since 2011 it transformed into ‘Academy of Creative Abilities’.

‘Academy of Creative Abilities’ are meetings with prominent specialists in the areas of culture and art. It is a modern, interactive form of cultural education, conducted through workshops, presentations and artistic experiments with participants. The purpose of these meetings is to create a permanent educational offer, going beyond the standard forms of teaching, which could shape an attitude of conscious art perception. The diversity of Academy meetings (theatre, visual arts, music, dance), falling into different subject modules, allows to attract more and more people of various interests.

Dance in the Factory – a series which involves films and lectures devoted to the history of dance, as well as the most important events in modern art. It also involves practical workshops on specific styles: flamenco, Bollywood dance, Indonesian dances, parades, modern, contact improvisation and other.

Stage alphabets – meetings devoted to different elements which build theatre – from basic tasks of actors, acrobatic exercises to the principles of puppet and object animation and work with multimedia presentations. Apart from CHOREA members, the meetings have been conducted by: Thomas Lebhart, Maja Komorowska, Jadwiga Rodowicz, Piotr Borowski, Paweł Passini, Arti Grabowski, Elżbieta Rojek, Teatr Figur form Cracow, Majsternia Pisni, Mikolaj Trzaska, Robert Hayden, John Moran.

Sounds in the Factory – a series of music workshops which encompass learning vocal techniques and songs of various traditions (Balkans, Macedonia, Ukraine), as well as learning basic rhythmic structures, which are the foundations of the music of Europe, Balkans and Middle East. Maciej Rychły’s ‘sound workshops’, which gave name to the series, have already taken place, as well as the workshops on Byzantine singing by Maciej Kaziński, Balkan songs by Elina Toneva, antique songs by CHOREA Theatre, beatbox by Sean Palmer, Speech Level Singing by Bartek Caboń, vocal workshops by Kuba Pałys, and the workshop on stuttering by Paweł Korbus.

FACTORY STAGE

Factory Stage combines two ideas. First of all, it is a place where theatre plays are staged – it is an open off stage, the first in Łódź, and one of the very few in Poland. CHOREA’s artistic output is presented here. Art management is another idea of the Factory Stage. We also invite Polish and foreign initiatives which, like CHOREA, break classic theatre stereotypes (division into genres or techniques), and are open to experiments. So far, we have hosted: Who laughs at my fears? by Diplomado Teatro Del Cuerpo / Cinema Theatre, Geist by Kana Theatre, the Wylewka. Polish unsingable poetry performance starring Zbyszek Kowalski and Łukasz Wójcicki, IF neTTheatre / Center of Performing Arts MITOS.
